The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and various states are considering expanding the regulatory framework for PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) to include air emissions. Specifically, environmental regulatory agencies in North Carolina, New Mexico, and New Jersey have submitted a joint petition calling on the EPA to add perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), and HFPO dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) to the Clean Air Act's list of hazardous air pollutants (HAP). Although the EPA has taken steps to address PFAS contamination in drinking water, there are currently no federal regulations controlling PFAS air pollution.
